Frequently Asked Questions
How durable are epoxy floors?
Epoxy floors are known for their durability and resilience. They can withstand heavy foot traffic, impact, and abrasion. Epoxy has high chemical resistance which extends the life of the flooring. Epoxy floors are known to last 15+ years.
DIY epoxy floors vs. Hay-Co epoxy floors
Hay-Co epoxy floors are professionally installed with high grade material. The first step is to grind the floor which creates a strong mechanical bond before product is installed. Hay-Co uses a two part product consisting of 100% epoxy and hardener. Hay-Co epoxy floors are strong, durable and long lasting.
DIY epoxy flooring uses water based epoxy and an acid etching system to clean existing floors. Acid etching systems only remove contaminates on the surface of existing concrete and does not allow the product to adhere or anchor to the concrete. Water based epoxy can contain up to 50% water in some products; greatly reducing its strength and durability. If products are not properly mixed bubbling, or peeling, can occur quickly and the floor will not last.
How do I clean epoxy floors? Which cleaning products are recommended?
Epoxy floors can be vacuumed and mopped like any other floor. A scrub brush and mild soap or degreaser can be used for major spills. Rinse well and squeegee to avoid slick surfaces. If your environment calls for the use of chlorine bleach or any other corrosive cleaner do NOT use more than a 10% solution to protect longevity of the floor.
What is the difference between Epoxy and Polyurea?
Epoxy and polyurea are both durable long lasting flooring systems; but have distinct differences. Epoxy is sensitive to UV light and will yellow overtime if exposed; using a polyaspartic top coat can correct this issue. Epoxy is generally a cheaper option compared to polyurea but takes longer to cure and is applied using a two day system. Polyurea is a fast curing material that is applied using a one day system. It is a heat and high impact resistant flooring option that has greater flexibility than epoxy. Polyurea is UV stable; it will not yellow overtime when exposed to UV light. Both epoxy and polyurea are great options, choosing between the two all depend on your specific needs and environment.
